They did give each of us a stick, ostensibly to poke the lions in the eye if they started to get in our face.  Pam decided it was better to hang close to one of the guides who carried a rifle (with live rounds) instead of relying on her stick.  After a while, she got more comfortable with the idea of being around these amazing animals.
