What must it have been like for Hiram Bingham in 1911 when he came across this "lost city of the Incas"?  What you see today is essentially unchanged from the early photos taken by Bingham's team after the site, which was overgrown by brush, was excavated.  You can look at those amazing photos if you want - many hang in the Sanctuary Lodge just outside the gates.
