Antarctica, December, 2010 - January, 2011

Emperor penguins are best known for the sequence of journeys adults make each year in order to mate and to feed their offspring.  They are the only penguin species that breeds during the Antarctic winter, and they will trek up to 75 miles inland over the ice to breeding colonies.  Emperors are the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species, reaching 4 feet tall and up to 100 pounds.
