Puerto Rico 2007

What is a Bio-Bay?  It is a protected body of water in which a microscopic plankton known as Pyrodinium Bahamense thrives.  In each gallon of this water there is 720,000 of these organisms.  Much like fireflies, when the water is disturbed the plankton emits a faint, shimmering blue light.  The effect on this moonless night was rather spectacular!  It is very hard to photograph, though -- this unretouched photo is a 20 second hand-held exposure with reduced power rear curtain sync flash.  You can clearly see the glowing blue water where Pam has been paddling.  The streaky white light in the background is from the Fajardo lighthouse.
