| Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is a reconstruction of the original which stood just 750 feet from here. The original was built in 1599 and was destroyed by fire in 1613. The new theatre opened in 1997 and is quite authentic. It was the first thatched roof building permitted in London since the Great Fire of London in 1666. |
