Lake Titicaca is considered a sacred place to the Andean peoples.  At an altitude of 12,460 feet, it is 109 miles long and 31 miles wide and forms part of the border between Peru and Bolivia.  Communities of indians live on man-made and natural islands.  Boats made of reeds have been documented on the lake as early as 2500 B.C.
