Machu Picchu, Peru 2006

Here's an overview of the Inca trail to Machu Picchu.  It begins along the river but rises up into the mountains quickly to a maximum altitude of 13,700 feet.  Note that the railroad follows the river, but the Inca trail does not.  Most all hikers hire porters to assist with carrying equipment and supplies, averaging 1.5 porters per hiker.
