This is the entrance to the Homer Tunnel, cut through the mountains of Fiordland linking Milford Sound and Te Anau.  It is one-way, so you have to wait for your turn to go through.  The light (currently red) changes every 15 minutes - so there is a little parking area for people to stretch their legs.
