The Golden Pavilion in Kyoto is three floors tall, and topped with a bronze statue of a phoenix.  The top two floors are covered in gold leaf and the temple extends out over a pond which reflects the brilliant facade.  Originally built in 1393, a student monk with metaphysical aspirations burned it down in 1950.  It was rebuilt in 1955.
