| The Dutch did not invent the windmill, they are believed to have originated in eastern Persia near Afghanistan. The Dutch certainly refined the windmill, increasing its efficiency. At one time there were approximately 10,000 windmills in Holland. Today, about 1,000 remain and all are registered as national monuments. |
