Quito, Ecuador 2008

Pam checks out the monument in the center of La Plaza de la Independencia, marking the date of August 10, 1809.  Although that was the date Ecuador declared its independence from Spain, it would take 12 bloody years before the Spanish were expelled from the country in 1822.  Nevertheless, August 10th is Ecuador's most important national holiday - much like July 4th in the U.S.A.
