The American Oystercatcher is not endemic to the Galápagos - they are found along the coast in North and South America. Their long beak allows them to poke into small nooks in lava-formed tidal pools that are too deep for other predators. Their beak allows them to pry apart an oyster, clam or mussel and snip the muscle that holds the shells together. I think the Sally Lightfoot crabs are just waiting for the leftovers! |
