There are two types of Frigate birds in the Galápagos: The Great Frigate and the Magnificent Frigate. These are Great Frigate birds which are large, with iridescent black feathers (the females have a white underbelly), have long wings (male wingspan can reach 6 feet) and deeply-forked tails. The males have inflatable red-colored throat pouches, which they inflate to attract females during the mating season. Here, two males are competing for what they perceive to be a good position. |
