The other way we could get ashore is shown here - a "dry" landing.  The Zodiac driver would push the nose of the boat up against a lava formation so that we could step right off the front onto land.  Sometimes we would find that the National Park Service provided a concrete landing area or even a handrail as seen here.  We were always required to wear lifejackets in transit to/from our ship, and the Naturalists collected them in that big blue bag.
