H.C. Andersen wrote ”The Little Mermaid” fairytale in 1837. In 1909, Carl Jacobsen, founder of Carlsberg Breweries, saw a performance of a ballet based on the fairytale at the Royal Theatre and was so fascinated by it that he commissioned a statue from sculptor Edvard Eriksen and had it placed on a granite rock on the Copenhagen waterfront.
