Antarctica, December, 2010 - January, 2011

Paradise Bay is one of those few places on the Antarctic mainland where some of the land is not covered by snow and ice.  As expected, there is life here - Gentoo penguins are nesting.  This one is typical in that it has a wide white stripe extending across the top of its head.  Also typical is the roughly circular pile of stones comprising the nest, and note that there are two eggs (one is dirty and partially under the bird).
