The Mammoth site is thought to be located where a cavern collapsed. The resulting steep-sided hole (65 feet deep) became a pond and attracted wildlife. Over 350-700 years, the hole filled with sediments adn mammoth remains. As of 2012, at least 61 individual mammoths had been identified.
