The inscription on the monument to JB 'Wild Bill' Hickok reads 'Died Aug 2, 1876 by pistol shot aged 39 years. Custer was lonely without him'. This apparently refers to Hickok's service to General George A. Custer's 7th Cavalry as a scout. Custer reportedly loved Hickok and admired his fearlessless.
