Several of these 'Pigtail' bridges are found in the Black Hills, including this one on Iron Mountain Road. They allow negotiation of sudden elevation drops while preserving natural features for the scenic highway. Natural materials (local timber) were used, and the corkscrew design is effective, spectacular, but expensive.
