This monument commemorates the battle of Bunker Hill, the first major battle of what would become the Revolutionary War.  As the British attacked, the leader of the Rebel troops (Israel Putnam) shouted his now famous battle cry:  "Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes!".  Completed in 1843, the monument is 221 feet tall and was modeled after Egyptian obelisks.  It was later copied by the builders of the Washington Monument.
