The famous Old Blacksmiths Shop in Gretna Green, Scotland, is somewhat of an embarrassment to most Scots.  At one time, anyone could perform a legal marriage in Scotland and because Gretna Green is one of the first villages north of the English border -- runaway couples who could not get married under the law in England came up here to do it.  The village Blacksmith just happened to be situated near the main road and made a few bucks off the deal.
