Sharjah 2009

Inside the Museum of Islamic Civilization in Sharjah our guide explains the significance of the Kaaba, the cuboidal building in Mecca, Saudi Arabia which is the most sacred site in Islam.  The building pre-dates Islam, and according to Islamic tradition it was built by Abraham.  There is a huge mosque around it, and all Muslims around the world face the Kaaba during prayers - no matter where they are.  One of the Five Pillars of Islam requires every capable Muslim to make a pilgrimage here (the Hajj) at least once in their lifetime (if they are healthy and can afford it).
