This photo shows the tail of one stingray including the barb mid-way back they can use to sting.  Unprovoked, these rays are harmless.  If stepped on, they whip their tail and the sting can be memorable.  It is very rare to be impaled by the barb in the chest as happened to Steve (The Crocodile Hunter) Irwin.
