The magnificent Vasa set sail on her maiden voyage in 1628, but after only a few minutes she began to heel over. To everyone's shock and disbelief, she quickly sank killing at least 30 of her 150 crew. She was found amazingly preserved by the Baltic mud which protected her from the worms that can eat through a ship's timbers. She was raised from the seabed in an unprecedented operation in 1961. |
