The Romans built their Temple of Jupiter here, which was later replaced (343 A.D.) with a Christian cathedral. In the 11th century there was a Romanesque-style church here, but the current Gothic structure was started in 1298 and finished in 1450. It was pretty humble until the 19th century when it was redone in a more ornate, Neo-Gothic style. Finally, the 230 foot tall central spire was added in 1913. |
