| There has been a fortress on this location in Belgrade since the Romans built one in the 1st century, A.D. The site is important as it overlooks where the Sava River flows into the Danube. Under the Austrian rule, from 1717 to 1739, after the construction of new, modern forts, the Belgrade Fortress became one of the strongest military fortifications in Europe. |
