As you go south along the western coast of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope relents for the first time anywhere south of the equator and, therefore, the rounding of the Cape of Good Hope in 1498 was a major psychological and geographic milestone in the attempts by the Portuguese to establish a sea route to the Far East.  There are some 26 shipwrecks in this area!
