This is the area where Dian Fossey, an American zoologist, primatologist, and anthropologist lived, worked, and was murdered. She studied the gorillas here extensively over a period of 18 years and her 1983 book 'Gorillas in the Mist' combined her personal story and scientific study and was adapted into the 1988 film of the same name. Her murder was never solved.
