The amazing system of waterworks at Peterhof has remained virtually unchanged since 1721.  The water is conveyed over 20 kilometers from the source via ducts and pipes, all downhill without any pumping stations.  The centerpiece of the Grand Cascade is a gilt Samson opening the jaws of a lion from which a large jet of water spurts up into the air.
