G.U.M. (pronounced "goom") is short for Gosudarstvenny Universalny Magazin (or State Department Store). It occupies one entire side of Red Square, directly opposite the Kremlin walls. In the 1800's there were rows of trading stalls here. Today, many Russian and some Western shops lease space here turning it into a sort of "mall".
