| The huge pearl monument along Doha's Corniche commemorates the days when Qatar's economy depended on fishing and pearling. When the Japanese introduced cultured pearls in the 1930's, the economy here suffered greatly. The monument is adjacent to the Marina where you can still see many classic wooden dhows, and evidence of the new oil-based economy rising in the background. |
