Across the valley from the ruins at Ollantaytambo is a rock outcropping which looks like a bearded man's face.  The Inca believe the image was the deity Viracocha who had white skin and blue eyes - much different looking than native Peruvians.  Later, when the Spanish came - the Inca may have mistaken them for gods because of this likeness.
