This shot was taken to focus on the end of the Inca trail. Visitors to Machu Picchu in the days of the Inca did not arrive by bus, and the curvy road up to the site didn't exist then. At the top center of the photo is a notch where the Sun Gate stands - where the Inca trail ends on the approach to the city. From the notch off to the right you can sort of see a thin line which is the path down to the city -- except you will note that huge brown mudslide which interrupts the path! It happened a few weeks before we came, and folks hiking the Inca trail still can't come the last few hundred meters! They have to go back down into the valley and come up the road.... major bummer! |
