Was Machu Picchu just an Inca city?  Probably not, but was it a sacred retreat, a citadel, an astronomical or agricultural site?  No one knows for sure.  No one even knows why the city was abandoned.  This great accomplishment was apparently built, occupied, and abandoned in less than 100 years.
