| The Stupa of Swayambhunath Temple has prayer flags fluttering from the central spire. The white base represents the four elements - earth, water, fire and air. The thirteen concentric gold rings at the top of the spire symbolize the 13 degrees of knowledge and the 13 steps that must be taken to reach nirvana (final escape from the continuous cycles of existence). |
