Malé is the capital and most populous city in the Republic of the Maldives. In the center of the North Malé Atoll, the population in 2006 was just over 100,000 - fully a third of all people living on the 192 inhabited islands (there are 1,190 total islands in the Maldives). As you can see, the entirety of the small island is built-up. The highest point in all of the Maldives is 2.4 meters above sea level (less than 8 feet), leading to warnings that if sea levels continue to rise as a result of global warming, the entire country could be underwater in a matter of decades. |
