Driving towards the west from Isalo National Park, we came to this little town of Ilakaka. In the early 1990s there were only 40 residents in this area, but after the discovery of one of Earth's largest known alluvial sapphire deposits here, the population swelled to 60,000. Today it is still a sort of 'Wild West' of Madagascar.
