Kurashiki is lined with old warehouses which have been converted into shops, restaurants, and ryokans (inns).  Note the classic architecture, white stucco walls with pine-plank paneling and carbon-black tiles.  The window slats make it more difficult for outsiders to see in, still allowing a nice view from the inside.
