Before and After the Atomic Bomb
Inside the Peace Memorial Museum are huge mock-ups of the city of
Hiroshima before and after the bombing. It is hard to imagine the
type of destruction that took place. When the bomb exploded, the
temperature at the center of the fireball was several million degrees
centigrade. The temperature on the ground near the hypocenter was
2,000 to 3,000 degree centigrade -- consuming all combustibles and
melting tile and glass. Roll your mouse over the image to
see what was left after the blast! The target of the bomb was the T-shaped bridge in the lower
right-hand corner. The A-Bomb Dome is the green tile-roofed
building near the center along the river. The hypocenter of the
bomb is marked by a red pole on the left (in the "after" photo). |
