Cows are considered holy animals in India.  They are not slaughtered; you won't find beef on the menu at restaurants.  They are allowed to roam freely throughout the streets and often walk right into shop and homes.  Drivers must take care, for our driver told us that hitting a cow on the road can lead to a two-year jail sentence!
