Cochin 2012

Pam on Jew Town Road, the main street in this Jewish quarter.  Legend has it that the history of Kerala's Jews goes back to the time of King Solomon (10th century B.C.) when they excelled in exotic trade. Many believe that the Jews arrived on the Malabar Coast after the destruction of the second temple in Jerusalem around 70 AD.  Conflicts drove them to Cochin and in 1524 they found protection under the Hindu Raja who granted them land adjacent to his own palace (the Mattancherry Palace).
