Chain Bridge or Széchenyi lánchíd was named after count Széchenyi who took the initiative to build the bridge, the first between Buda and Pest which were separate cities on opposite sides of the Danube. The 1200 foot long and 50 foot wide bridge, a superb engineering feat, was opened on November 20, 1849. Unfortunately, the Germans succeeded in destroying the bridge during the siege of Budapest in 1945. Reconstruction began in 1947 and Chain Bridge was rebuilt in its original form by 1949. |
