Kinderdijk, The Netherlands, 2012

Having Pam stand under one of the windmills at Kinderdijk really gives you a sense of scale.  This windmill has been rigged to catch the wind and turn.  This is done by spreading sail material over the lattice framework, using more or less sail material for different wind strength.  This one is turning at one revolution every 16 seconds, but is capable of turning at one revolution every 10 seconds.  Click HERE to see a video of the windmill in action.
