| This is the Porta Praetoria, a gateway dating from 179 A. D. Giant blocks of stone were used to construct this gate in the northern wall of the Roman military fortress Castra Regina, part of the Roman settlement here ordered by Emperor Marcus Aurelius. 13 very large and smooth limestones are wedged into each other without mortar to form the arch which is about 8 feet high. |
