The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Rouen is a landmark of art history. Claude Monet painted the Gothic facade of this church more than 30 times at various times of the day and in various weather conditions. While the physical building never changed, the mood of his paintings did with the light and shadows, mist and clouds. He was capturing "impressions" of the building and gave rise to "impressionism". No doubt you have seen some of Monet's painting of this cathedral - but never realized that it is in Rouen. |
