Pointe du Hoc is a clifftop location about 4 miles west of Omaha Beach.  The cliffs here are 100 feet tall and at the point the Germans had built, as part of the Atlantic Wall, six casemates to house a battery of captured French 155-mm guns.  The U.S. 2nd Ranger Battalion was tasked with taking it out.
