The most famous cave paintings in the world were discovered here, 14 miles from Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, by four children playing with their dog. Dubbed "Lascaux", the cave drew huge crowds between 1948-1963 leading to deterioration of the treasure. The French smartly built this copy cave (Lascaux II) nearby, accurate to 1 cm, reproducing the best 40 yards including 90% of the paintings. Tickets for this cave are easy to come by. |
