Cuban Barbacoa! This photo shows what you see a lot of in Havana -- beautiful colonial buildings with high ceilings which have been converted by enterprising locals to have an artificial additional level per floor. Sometimes called "indoor favelas", they are a result of overcrowding in urban areas. Generally constructed with wood, these extra levels allow for more people to share the same space and can become quite hot - thus, the name "barbacoa" which means "barbecue". |
