Zagreb

This statue of Ban Jelačić was erected in the main square in 1866 and stood here until 1947 when Marshal Tito ordered it removed as he felt it was closely linked to Croat nationalism.  One of the first acts of the new government in 1990 was to retrieve the statue from storage and return it to the square.  Originally, the statue of Jelačić "pointed" with his saber north towards the enemy of Croatia, Hungary. Today the statue's position is reversed.
