Costa Rica 2009

Pam is under the cashew tree, holding the fruit & nut. The red fruit is called an apple, has an obnoxious odor (like dirty socks) and doesn't taste good. The fruit is used to make wine and frescos (juices or teas). The juice causes a terrible stain which is difficult if not impossible to get out. A single nut grows in the shell at the bottom of the apple. You can't just crack the shell and eat the nut as the oil is toxic!  The nut must be steamed or roasted before being safe to eat, which explains why you never see cashews in the shell.
